Marya Veeck’s Own Language

I have been painting, creating, my own worlds, talking to myself (and hopefully a few others) through my work for over 25 years. In the process I have developed my own symbolic language, refining favorite images of particular persons, places and events. My symbols run from personal to political, reflecting the past or presenting future speculations. Like the Madeleine that sent Proust on his famed journey, my symbols allow me to “time-travel” through memories and dreams. I believe these images may have that effect on others, so I offer this primer on an artist’s vocabulary.

In this alphabetized album of artwork almost anything is allowed.

Marya Veeck, Chicago artist and gallery owner, brings to life the images that connect her alphabet to her world.

Originally created for a one woman show, Ms. Veeck’s artistic alphabet has been collected and annotated with equally quirky text by Elizabeth Shepherd.
